B.H.P. Billiton Plans to Withdraw From Coal Association Over Climate Change Stance

The mining company also said that, given the Trump administration’s plans to abandon the Paris Agreement, it will reconsider its relationship with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

One of the world’s largest coal companies announced plans Tuesday to pull out of the World Coal Association due to the lobbying group’s regressive stance on climate change, the New York Times reports.

B.H.P. Billiton, a British-Australian mining company, noted in a report released Tuesday that it believes “the warming of the climate is unequivocal, the human influence is clear and physical impacts are unavoidable.”

“While we won’t always agree with our industry associations, we will continue to call out material differences where they exist and we will take action where necessary, as we have done today,” B.H.P.’s chief external affairs officer Geoff Healy said in a statement.

The mining company also said that, given the Trump administration’s plans to abandon the Paris Agreement, it will reconsider its relationship with the United States Chamber of Commerce.

B.H.P. is giving the World Coal Association until the end of March to respond before it officially leaves the group.
