President Donald Trump met on Friday with leaders from the world’s industrialized nations, but he remains undecided whether the United States will pull out of a major international climate-change accord, the BBC reports.
Trump met with leaders of the Group of Seven—Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan—to discuss issues of security, trade, and climate change. Afterward, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, the meeting’s host, told the BBC, “The question of the Paris climate accord is still hanging” because the U.S.’s unclear position.
While running for president, Trump said he would “cancel” the Paris Agreement, but, since entering the presidency, his stance has waffled. The Paris Agreement remains a politically polarizing issue in Washington: Republican senators signed a letter this week urging the president to make good on his campaign promise, but Trump’s daughter Ivanka, his son-in-law Jared Kushner, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Pope Francis, and most Senate Democrats have all come out in support of the agreement.
