Today, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld an injunction against President Donald Trump’s controversial travel ban. The appeals court, which covers Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, heard the case after a Maryland District Court judge issued a nationwide halt to the travel ban. The Maryland District Court had ruled that Trump’s own statements indicated the ban discriminated against Muslims and thus violated the Constitution.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that the president has a broad and absolute right to ban any group from the United States if he or she believes they will do harm to the nation. But the Fourth Circuit disagreed, ruling that, while the president’s power to deny immigrants entry is “broad,” it is “not absolute.”
