The chairmen of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence issued a joint statement today on President Donald Trump’s claims that his namesake Trump Tower had been wiretapped. “Based on the information available to us, we see no indications that Trump Tower was the subject of surveillance by any element of the United States government either before or after Election Day 2016,” said Chairman Richard Burr, of North Carolina, and Vice Chairman Mark Warner, of Virginia.
Earlier this month, Trump issued a series of early morning tweets claiming President Barack Obama had illegally wiretapped Trump Tower during the 2016 campaign. Shortly after, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer walked back the president’s claim, indicating that Trump’s comments weren’t to be taken literally.
“The president was very clear in his tweet that it was, you know, ‘wiretapping,’” Spicer said, using air quotes to indicate that wiretapping was meant to stand for surveillance in general, according to the New York Times.
