On Monday, the United States Supreme Court declined to hear the case of Gavin Grimm, a transgender boy who sued the Gloucester County, Virginia, school board for banning him from the men’s restroom. It would have been the first transgender rights case argued in the high court, the New York Timesreports.
The court agreed to hear the case in October, but, in February, the Trump administration reversed the federal government’s position that a law banning sex discrimination in schools protects transgender students’ right to use the bathroom of their choice. The Trump administration also rolled back guidelines by the Department of Education that said schools must allow students to use the bathrooms that match their gender identity or risk losing federal funding. The Supreme Court vacated an appeals court ruling in Grimm’s favor, and sent the case back down to the lower court for reconsideration.
