New York Is the Latest State to Sue an Opioid Manufacturer

Twenty-six other states have already sued the company.

New York on Tuesday filed a lawsuit claiming that Purdue Pharma LP used deceptive tactics to sell its painkiller Oxycontin, thus contributing to the opioid crisis.

“Purdue lined its own pockets by deliberately exploiting our communities, fueling a crisis that has devastated NY families,” New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood wrote in a tweet. “We are holding them to account.”

Purdue has denied allegations that it minimized the painkiller’s health risks to push sales, the Hill reports.

According to Underwood, 2,399 of the 3,068 overdose deaths in New York in 2016 were the result of opioid painkillers.
