We’re Accepting Applications for the 2018 ‘Pacific Standard’ Fellowship Class

We’re currently looking for two editorial fellows to join us for a one-year program starting in July.
The Pacific Standard offices in Santa Barbara, California.

The ideal Pacific Standard fellow is pursuing public interest journalism as a career, has experience working in a deadline-oriented environment, and has an abiding interest in public policy and social justice, as well as an understanding that investigative reporting and academic research are vital to finding solutions for society’s most significant and pressing problems.

Our fellows work closely with several key members of our print and digital teams and gain valuable experience in all aspects of magazine publishing.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the editorial staff with story research, fact-checking, and interviews for the eight-issue-per-year print, and daily online, magazine.
  • Work closely with the digital staff to write well-executed online articles on a variety of research-based subjects.
  • Gather materials—graphic, photographic, etc.—to accompany stories.
  • Produce and publish articles and other features to PSmag.com.
  • Help with general office responsibilities such as print and online story production work, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • A strong understanding of, and willingness to learn, how to deeply research a variety of topics, and be objective when gathering information.
  • Experience reporting and writing articles, either in print or online.
  • Willingness to accept direction, and participate fully in a collaborative work environment.
  • An ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with multiple assigned objectives without close supervision.

Fellowship Details

Because our fellowship is full-time and one full year in length, it is not appropriate for matriculated students. The fellowship will commence the first week of July. The position pays a stipend of $22,500 for the year, paid in regular biweekly installments. It is expected that editorial fellows will work standard hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, in our Santa Barbara, California, offices.

To Apply

Please email a resume and cover letter to associate editor Ben Rowen, at browen@psmag.com, by end of day, March 26th. Feel free to strengthen your application with a single writing sample and potential story ideas that fit what Pacific Standard is looking for (the details of which can be found here). All application materials should be submitted electronically. We regret that we cannot respond to all applicants. Absolutely no phone calls, please.
