With a government shutdown looming, the House of Representatives passed a temporary spending bill this morning to fund the government for another week; the Senate is expected to pass the measure later today. The bill, which will fund the government at current levels through next Friday, averts a shutdown and gives the two political parties more time to negotiate a compromise spending bill covering the remainder of the fiscal year.
The two parties were reportedly close to reaching an agreement over the Congressional recess, but negotiations have been complicated by President Donald Trump’s demands for border wall funding (which he has since dropped) and Democrats’ threats to vote against a spending bill if the GOP proceeds with a vote on the latest Affordable Care Act repeal bill.
