The Trump administration is gearing up to funnel resources from the Department of Justice’s civil rights division toward challenging affirmative action admissions policies, the New York Times reported Tuesday evening.
An internal memo to the civil rights division obtained by the Times calls for lawyers to take on “intentional race-based discrimination in college and university admissions”—likely meaning claims of discrimination against white applicants. The affirmative action policies to be scrutinized typically aim to compensate for historical disadvantages among black and Latino students, who receive four-year degrees at disproportionately low rates.
