As Hurricane Florence Barrels Toward the East Coast, Here Are the Other Storms Threatening Millions Worldwide

Multiple intense storms are moving across the Atlantic and the Pacific, with millions of people in their paths.
In this satellite image provided by the NOAA, Hurricane Florence churns through the Atlantic Ocean toward the U.S. East Coast, followed to the east first by Tropical Storm Isaac and then Hurricane Helene on September 11th, 2018.

As Hurricane Florence continued to approach the coast of the Carolinas on Wednesday, large-scale damage appeared imminent. “Disaster is at the doorstep and is coming in,” North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said, advising those who had not yet evacuated that there was still time to flee to safety.

Even as the hurricane dropped from Category 4 to Category 3 storm on Wednesday, its high-velocity winds and heavy rainfall were still set to deal days of damage to the East Coast—with some experts concerned that the storm could produce damage on the scale of 2005’s Hurricane Katrina.

While the United States turns its attention to Hurricane Florence, multiple other storms in the Pacific and Atlantic also threaten millions of people. Here are some of the other major storms brewing across the globe.

Super Typhoon Mangkhut

Super Typhoon Mangkhut is barreling toward the Philippines, the New York Times reports. The storm, careening forward with winds of up to 150 miles per hour, is on track to batter the Philippines before approaching Taiwan and potentially mainland China. As the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System reports, more than 40 million people could be exposed to cyclone-force winds.

Tropical Storm Olivia

Tropical Storm Olivia hit Maui on Wednesday, dropping torrential rain. Though the storm is weakening, Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa still warned residents to prepare for disaster by storing drinking water, preparing for power outages, and bracing themselves for potential landslides and floods.

Tropical Storm Isaac

The tropical storm moving through the Southern Caribbean weakened on Wednesday. Though Tropical Storm Isaac is not expected to strengthen, storm warnings continue in Martinique, Dominica, and Guadeloupe.
