The Department of Defense announced Tuesday it will provide Kurdish fighters in Syria with “heavier weapons” in an attempt to retake the city of Raqqa from ISIS, the New York Times reports.

An anonymous official told the Times that American government informed its Turkish counterpart of the plan before it was formally announced. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has long disproved of a plan to more aggressively arm Kurdish forces, claiming that they’re linked to the terrorist organization PKK.
