On Tuesday afternoon, President Donald Trump doubled down on his comments from the weekend blaming “many sides” for the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, the New York Times reports.

The president told reporters gathered at Trump Tower that the “alt-left” was just as responsible for violence at the weekend’s protests, which ended in the death of a 32-year-old woman after a white supremacist drove his car into a crowd of counter-protesters.

He also defended the protestors who had gathered that day to object to the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee. “Not all of those people were neo-Nazis, believe me,” Trump said. “Not all of those people were white supremacists by any stretch.”
