President Donald Trump has pledged to give $1 million of his own money to relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey, the Associated Press reports. The storm could leave parts of Houston uninhabitable for months, and is on track to be the costliest natural disaster in United States history.
Trump has yet to announce exactly which organizations he’ll donate to, and on Thursday the White House solicited suggestions from the press corps for reputable charities. “He’s actually asked that I check with the folks in this room since you are very good at research and have been doing a lot of reporting into the groups and organizations that have been the best and most effective in helping and providing aid and he would love some suggestions from the folks here and I would be happy to take them,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters.
While Sanders reiterated that Trump had pledged his “personal money,” she couldn’t confirm if the donation would come from the president or through the Trump Foundation. An analysis last year by the Washington Post found that the Trump Foundation has largely been funded by people other than Trump himself; the president, in fact, hadn’t contributed anything to the fund since 2008.
