The ideal Pacific Standard fellow is pursuing public interest journalism as a career, has experience working in a deadline-oriented environment, and has an abiding interest in public policy and social science, as well as an understanding that intensive reporting and academic research are vital to finding solutions for society’s most significant and pressing problems.

Our fellows work closely with several key members of our print and digital teams and gain valuable experience in all aspects of magazine publishing.

  • Experience with various research tools such as LexisNexis, academic paper databases, and PACER.
  • Experience reporting and writing articles, either in print or online.
  • Willingness to accept direction, and participate fully in a collaborative work environment.

Fellowship Details

Because our fellowship is full-time and one full year in length, it is not appropriate for matriculated students. The position pays a stipend of $22,500 for the year, paid in regular biweekly installments; it is expected that editorial fellows will work standard hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, in our Santa Barbara, California, offices.

To Apply

Please email a resume and cover letter to Pacific Standard’s editorial staff at editor@psmag.com. Feel free to strengthen your application with a writing sample and a potential story idea that fits what Pacific Standard is looking for (the details of which can be found here). All application materials should be submitted electronically. We regret that we cannot respond to all applicants. Absolutely no phone calls, please.

Design Fellow

Pacific Standard is looking for a highly motivated design fellow to join its creative team. The ideal candidate is a creative thinker and collaborator with strong organizational skills and a passion for graphic design. Reporting to the creative director, the design fellow will assist in the daily workflow of the magazine.

Candidates should have an interest in magazine publishing, strong working knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, and, most importantly, be eager to learn.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and research ideas for visual sections of the magazine and website.
  • Assist in producing photoshoots and assigning illustrations.
  • Assist in designing pages for front-of-book and back-of-book print magazine sections.
  • Assist in proofreading and shipping pages to press.
