Mark Lukach began writing about his wife’s psychotic episodes (“My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward”) so that people in similar situations would know they weren’t alone. In his story, he describes his efforts to adapt to Giulia’s stints in and out of the hospital. “In forcing myself to understand psychiatry and the anti-psychiatry movement, I was able to explore and expose ideas that I think can help other families even more. The acute crises are going to be difficult no matter what, but there might be ways to make the months in between feel less hopeless.” Lukach is working on a memoir about the topic, and has given TED Talks and performed at the Moth.
