Most voters give President Donald Trump a failing grade for his first year in office, according to a new poll from Politico and Morning Consult. Overall, 46 percent of voters gave Trump a “D” or “F” for his performance this year, while 34 percent gave the president an “A” or “B” grade.
Trump’s lowest marks came from his handling of climate change, national debt, and foreign relations. In each case, 48 percent or more of voters gave the president a “D” or “F” grade. He earned his highest marks in his handling of jobs and the economy, where 42 percent of voters gave the president an “A” or “B” grade. Thirty-nine percent gave him a passing grade for fighting terrorism. When it came to immigration and “draining the swamp,” both of which were major thrusts of the president’s election campaign, more Americans gave Trump a failing grade than a passing one.
Perceptions of the president’s first year varied by gender and political affiliation: Seventy-two percent of Republicans gave Trump an “A” or “B,” while 79 percent of Democrats gave the president a “D” or “F.” Men were slightly more likely to give Trump a passing grade than women, though, overall, both were more likely to give Trump a “D” or “F” than an “A” or “B” grade.
Trump’s overall grades have fallen since the last time the poll was conducted, around his 100th day in office, Politico notes. Yet, despite the financial, personal, and political scandals that marked his first year, he earned higher grades with Republicans in this latest poll than he did in the last go-round.
