Twin attacks at Iran’s parliament building and a shrine to the Iranian Revolution’s father killed 12 and injured dozens in the capital of Tehran on Wednesday.
The attacks, carried out with guns and suicide bombs, mark the first major acts of terrorism in Iran since 2010, CNN reports. Some officials attempted to downplay the incidents, which targeted areas popular with tourists and frequented by lawmakers. From CNN:
“As you know, some coward terrorists infiltrated a building … but they were seriously confronted,” [speaker of the Iranian parliament Ali Larijani] said in a statement.
“This is a minor issue but reveals that the terrorists pursue trouble-making.”
This incident comes days after ISIS announced its responsibility for an attack in London that left eight people dead, and is one of over 10 the terrorist organization has claimed so far in 2017.
