California Voters Can’t Take ‘Ballot Selfies’ This Election

Bummer, smartphone fans: Amid concerns over voting rights ahead of next week’s election, a judge just blocked one California group from the polls: selfie-takers.

A federal judge denied a request from the American Civil Liberties Union yesterday to suspend California’s ban of “ballot selfies” for next Tuesday’s vote. Although California Governor Jerry Brown signed a law to undo the ban on sharing photographs of marked ballots, that change won’t apply until January 1st, the Los Angeles Times reported.

So the ACLU — which argues that these laws violate First Amendment rights — will get its way in California next year. But for this election, any Californians hoping to boast selfies with their marked ballots should expect to get scolded — assuming poll monitors aren’t distracted by bigger worries.
