The Aliso Canyon Oil Field—the site of the largest accidental leak of greenhouse gases in American history—has been cleared to re-open at reduced capacity, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Aliso Canyon Oil Field has been out of commission since October of 2015, when the Southern California Gas Company discovered an underground natural gas storage well in the facility had blown out. The company was not able to plug the leaking well for nearly four months, forcing local families to evacuate. Ultimately, Aliso Canyon released about as much methane, a potent greenhouse gas, as the entire Los Angeles Basin does in a year.
